43 health practitioners in Western Region have tested positive for COVID-19

About 43 health workers in the Western Region have tested positive for COVID-19.

20 of the cases are from the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi while 23 others are from the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality.

Report established that the confirmed cases at the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital were contacts traced from a staff who earlier tested positive for COVID-19.

According to managements of the hospital, a number of measures have been put in place to protect the rest of the health workers from contracting the virus.

Meanwhile, three units of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital were closed down after the staff member tested positive for COVID-19 on last week Friday May 15, 2020.

The three units included Antenatal Care Unit, Child Welfare Clinic and the Ear Nose and Throat Unit.

Those units were disinfected immediately the cases were confirmed to contain the infection and mitigates its spread.

The Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr Joseph Kojo Tambil, who confirmed the news to the media said the infected staffs were isolated and all other contacts have been ordered to self-quarantine while their samples were being tested.

Dr Tambil disclosed that the infected staff members had spent some time at different units of the hospital and as such, staff members in those departments have been asked to self-quarantine as well.

“One of our staffs who had mild symptoms got tested and her results came out positive. So we quickly started taking samples of people that she works with and since she was working at the Antenatal Clinic, we had to take samples of all the staffs. She also spent some time at the ENT Department so we also closed down that department and took samples of the staff,” he added.

Dr Tambil entreated the rest of the health workers not to panic, adding that plans were far advanced to help contain the spread of the virus in the hospital.

Effia-Nkwanta Hospital is the main referral hospital in the Western Region of Ghana and so far, the Western Region had recorded a total of 170 positive COVID-19 cases.
