‘Wele, Sebe, Kontomire’ critics are shallow minded people— Kuami Eugene

Highlife musician Kuamie Eugene has described critics of his “Open Gate” track as shallow minded for claiming  a portion of the lyrics ‘Wele, Sebe, Kontomire’ irrational words thus worth no Grammy.

This comes in after Kwame A-Plus condemned those lyrics on United Showbiz as a track that Ghanaian artistes cannot use to win Grammys.

According to the Lynx Entertainment Signee, the lyrics in the track was something Ghanaians could relate to, noting that “Open Gate” has become the number one playlist in all prominent events in the country.

Speaking in an interview with the media in Accra last week Kuami Eugene stated that Ghanaians love to criticise their own while praising others.

“I was happy when the GRAMMY award came to Burna Boy because he is African and Nigeria is about two countries from us. People say “Wele sebe Kontomire” does not meet GRAMMY Award standard.

Meanwhile, we sing to “Anybody, wey no want to soji” and we do not even understand what it means. Yet, that artiste won a GRAMMY.

We love to criticise our own. If it is Ghanaian and it’s ours, then it is bad. That is how bad it is,” he lamented.

Kuami Eugene noted that most Ghanaians helped Burna Boy to remain on chart as number one.

“When was the last time a Ghanaian released an album that would be in the charts from number 1 to 10 or 12. We’ve not done it for our own Ghanaian artistes. Meanwhile we did for Burna Boy and we do not even understand some of things he says.

With music, we sometimes do not understand what the artiste is saying yet we enjoy it. That is what music is supposed to do break boundaries,” he added.

Rockstar noted that even in the movie industry, Ghanaians fail to patronise the local movies but consume other countries’ movies.

“If you are not supporting your own, don’t say anything negative about it,” he stressed.

He lamented that Ghanaians criticise everything Ghana yet go out there to support foreign music which they don’t even understand the lyrics.
