Drama‘ in Parliament: NPP MPs forced to occupy minority side of parliament

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has forced the New Patriotic Party Parliamentary members to sit at the minority side of parliament.

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah in an interview in Accra today stated that the leaders of the NPP preempted the action of the NDC to mare the swearing-in of Members of the eight Parliament.

The NDC members today sat on the majority side of parliament, claiming they were the majority.

The event led to chaos in Parliament, with some of the legislators pushing each other while the NDC occupy the right side of the Speaker’s chair.

According to Mr Nkrumah, the NDC actions showed they would cause confusion during the swearing-in of the eight Parliamentary members and decided not to give them room to operate.

He said NDC had the motive to cause mayhem and destroy the beauty of the swearing-in.

However, Ms Ursula Owusu-Ekuful refused to move to the left side of the parliament and remained among the NDC at the majority side.

Ms Owusu-Ekuful indicated that before Parliament was adjourned on Wednesday at 5:00pm, she sat at the right side of the speaker and would continue to sit there until the seventh Parliament is dissolved.

Standing on the Constitution, she noted that since the seventh Parliament was not dissolved, the NPP was the majority and was ready to give the party’s position to the minority for them to occupy.

The NDC and the NPP has 137 Parliamentary members each with one independent candidate.

However, Court granted an injunction against the Assin North NDC MP-elect over dual citizenship, thus the current members-elect of the NDC legally stands at 136 while the NPP stands at 137.
