Ghana has lost the war against COVID-19— Socialist Forum reacts to the Second wave

Socialist Forum Ghana (SFG) has reiterated calls on government to as a matter of urgency, increase public sensitisation on measures put in place to fight the second wave of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak in the country.

According to the forum, “Ghana is currently losing the war against COVID-19 and there was the need for the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to inform the citizenry on government response to the second wave.”

This was contained in a press statement issued in Accra on Tuesday and signed by the Secretary to the Standing Committee of SFG, Yaw Appiah-Kubi.

The statement explained that for the public to understand the behaviour of the new variant of COVID-19 the government must provide more regular, transparent, accurate and credible information about the virus and the disease.

“We must evaluate and implement programme of measures designed to limit physical interaction including; full lockdown of hot-spot communities and districts, bans on both religious and secular gatherings of more than certain number of people,” it added.

The statement also called for restrictions on the numbers of people in vehicles and urged the government to close down schools and universities.

The Forum appealed to President Akufo-Addo to avoid the disastrous mistakes that led to the failure of the March 2020 lockdown and act now before things escalate.

The statement called for effective data gathering and management of the ailment and underscored the need for compulsory testing among the citizenry.

“We need to get ready to deal with more infected people. This means an upgrade medical infrastructure and capacity and critically better provisions for our frontline workers,” it stated.

Science, the statement said has delivered vaccines that could control COVID-19 infection rates to the level that would protect the national health system and appealed to the government to inform the country on the arrangement made to acquire the vaccine.

“Government must, as a matter of urgency, tell the public what specific arrangements are in place to acquire, distribute and monitor its vaccination programme,” it said.

The statement cautioned the citizenry not to disregard the pleas and warnings from the scientific and medical community regarding the dangers “our current behaviour holds for society” and adhere to the safety protocols.
