Ghana’s biggest awards night, VGMA is expected to take place with live audience irrespective of the surge in COVID-19 case

This year’s Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) is slated for August 2020 after the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus virus delayed management plans to host it earlier.

According to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Charterhouse, Theresa Ayoade, the decision of management follows President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s directive to further ease some of the restrictions pertaining to social gatherings to enhance business activities in the country.

She explained that the strict protocols which were in place to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic prevented conferences and other form of gatherings that involved large crowd.

As the president was easing restrictions, Ms Ayoade stated that her team was re-strategising to offer the best services to patrons and the nominees for satisfactory awards show in August irrespective of the challenges the virus had imposed on the entertainment and the tourism industry.

She noted that management invest more into the awards scheme therefore, they were employing strategies in order to adjust to any losses that might arise from the awards scheme when held.

“The challenges of putting together logistics and not being sure of expected revenue is a real issue. In normal times, we would have been able to sell up to 4,000 tickets in VGMA-related events, but it is not so now,” Ms Ayoade cried.

In ensuring memorable event, she promised the readiness of her outfit to adopt digital platforms and new innovative means to meet the guidelines outlined by the Ministry of Tourism to make this year’s show successful.

Ms Ayoade further stated that instead of a virtual event like the just-ended 3Music Awards, the 2020 VGMA would have live audience, with strict adherence to social-distancing and other related protocols to secure the lives of patrons.

To ensure inclusive participation of Ghanaian artistes and celebrities stuck in foreign countries, Ms Ayoade said that preparations were underway to hold a virtual show aside the normal televised show.

That, she observed would make the event more entertaining, stressing that viewers and patrons would gain the kind of enjoyment they always get during the event.
