Hair colouring: New craze musicians use in remaining relevant in the industry?

The Ghanaian entertainment industry is one of the industries which its players are competing effectively with the world’s renowned entertainers as such they constantly change their music genres, fashion and branding.

Showbiz and branding is said to go hand in hand to boost artiste’s craft on the market.

Cambridge Dictionary defines branding as “the act of giving a company a particular design or symbol in order to advertise its products and services.”

However, the meaning of branding has evolved with Tom Goodwin defining brands as “essentially patterns of familiarity, meaning, fondness, and reassurance that exist in the minds of people,”  as it stands no matter how brand or branding is defined, it will always be linked to visual identity in the minds of people.

Many see artiste branding as how a musician portrays his or her destinctive personality to the world.

In so doing, every musician either has signature hair, a particular form of dressing, dancing, voice and genre to distinguish his or her craft from competitors across globe.

In Ghana’s showbiz industry, branding has remained vital with some musicians cutting their hair in a particular manner, conviction of dread logs and hair dying or colouring.

The secular music scenes have seen tremendous increase in musicians adopting to coloured hair as a signature hair. This craze sets in after the craze of dread logs.

Hair colouring is said to be about the reactions that take place in between the pigments in one’s hair, dye, peroxide and ammonia.

While it can be fun experimenting with colours, the damage they can cause in the form of dry and brittle hair can dampen the fun.

Most celebrities like Shatta Wale, Medikal, Joey B, KiDi, Okese 1, Keche, Adina Thembi, Bosom P Yung among others who coloured their hair mostly do it to create a buzz around them in order to remain in the news, to brand themselves to wow fans, or to introduce a new form of fashion for their fans to adopt and to lead trends.

Although a hair stylist said, hair colouring was in vogue and this time round both the youth and the old were interested in colouring their hairs but it still remained key branding for musicians and sometimes footballers.

Hair colouring was one of the trends that many followed to give a change to their overall look and it is a form of long term commitment that will have a person rushing to the salon every month.

“It is an intensive process which includes several steps and extra care,” a stylist said.

There are a variety of colours these musicians choose from to use on their hair, but most used colours are grey, blue, green, gold, blonde, red and pink.

Some musicians including Konti Hene and Bisa K’Dei who lost the hype quickly adjusted themselves and return with hair colouring to get them in the trends.

La Meme Gang, a group with its members including Darko  Vibes, 1Rjz and Nxwrth got the needed attention after they headed out in the music world with coloured hair.

Musician like KiDi is now using his re-branded coloured hair to project his new album: “The Golden Boy.”

Whether fun or branding this new craze has created a buzz on many musicians who have now adopted to remain relevant in the industry.
