Municipal Assemblies in Volta Region declare nonconformance to the wearing of face masks as offence

As part of efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus in the country, various municipal assemblies in the Volta Region have declared the wearing of face masks as mandatory.

According to a statement issued on Thursday in Ho Municipal Assembly,  the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the assembly, Prosper Kofi Pi-Bansa stated that the assembly would not relent on its efforts to help in the fight against COVID-19.

He said collective efforts was needed to combat the virus from the area therefore  the public including transport operators, commuters, sellers, buyers, pedestrians, workers of both public and private sectors, food vendors, hawkers, drivers, passengers and anyone appearing in public both young and old should adopt the habit of wearing a face mask.

That, Mr Pi-Bansa noted would help protect themselves and others in order for them not to spread the virus through droplets.

He warned the public not to move out without the wearing of face coverings, saying “please note that it is an offence to appear in public henceforth or to be seen transacting any business without a face mask.”

Also, the Ketu South Municipal Assembly issued similar statement to advise the people of the area to protect themselves in public by wearing protective coverings.

In view of this, the MCE of the area, Mr Eliot Edem Agbenorwu, indicated that all institutions both public and private operating within the Ketu South Municipality were hereby informed to ensure that individuals, clients and staffs wear face masks during all contact hours.

The directives he said would be effective from Monday, May 4.

“We hope this information will go a long way to help stop the spread of the deadly COVID-19 in our Municipality and by extension Ghana as a whole,” Mr Agbenorwu added.

He promised his outfit’s commitment to assist the vulnerable and the needy with some of the protective coverings, adding that his outfit had patronised 1,000 nose masks to embark on that journey.

“The assembly had procured some 1,000 pieces of the face masks to be distributed from Monday May 4,” the MCE said.

Meanwhile, the people of Accra and Cape Coast were already ordered to wear the mask after the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo declared the public wear of nose mask and the lift of ban.

The Ministry of Health (MoH) which endorsed the call stated that it was mandatory for everyone in the country to wear face mask in order not to contract the virus from a person closer to him or her.

MoH maintained that everyone has a priority to protect his or herself against the pandemic and urged the entire people to adopt this new lifestyle to improve their health against the virus.
