Nana Akufo-Addo has failed the nation—John Mahama cries over the increased number of COVID-19 cases

Former President, John Dramani Mahama has stated that the continuous rise in novel coronavirus cases in the country signifies the government’s failure to contain the spread of the virus.

According to him, within 24 hours the positive cases had jumped from 3,091 to 4,012, stressing that it clearly illustrates the failure of government to mitigate the spread of COVID-19.

He made the allegations in a recent post to react to the the increased number of the cases after the Ghana Health Services (GHS) updated the public on the confirmed cases.

“From 3,091 to 4,012 COVID-19 cases within 24 hours; Government is certainly failing the people of Ghana,” ex President bemoaned.

He noted that fear gripped many homes last night when the latest confirmed cases were released.

Former President, Mahama entreated the citizenry to protect themselves and observe the necessary protocols enrolled by the government officials and the Ministry of Health, to ensure their safety.

He called on them to wash their hands frequently, adhere to the social distancing and hygiene protocols and if possible they should stay at home to prevent further spread.

“I want to encourage you to protect yourself. Regular hand washing with soap under running water is a must. Stay home but if you have to go out for any reason including work, wear your mask, take along a hand sanitiser, and always disinfect commonly used and touched surfaces,” the former President advised.

He explained that, he could understand why people were scared by the increased number in confirmed cases, adding that “COVID-19 is real, my brothers and sisters.”

However, on Friday the GHS explained that over 50per cent of the confirmed cases were as a result of an outbreak in an industrial facility (name of the industry withheld) with 1,300 workers of which 533 have been confirmed positive.

The death count of the deadly respiratory ailment in Ghana according to the GHS remains at 18.

The recoveries have increased by 20 pushing the total recovery figure to 323.

A total of 3,436 of the cases were in Accra with  210 in Ashanti and 96 in Eastern while 58 of the cases are in Central with  Western North 56,  Western 35, Volta 32, Upper East 26, Oti 24, Upper West 20, Northern 16, North East Region 2 and Bono 1.

It is also noted that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has commended the government for the effective and innovative means of managing the virus in the country.
