Prez declares Monday, December 7 as holiday following the general elections

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has declared Monday, December 7, 2020, as a statutory holiday to facilitate the conduction of the general elections.

The holiday, however replaces Friday December 4, 2020, National Farmers’ day holiday.

This follows a proposal the Electoral Commission (EC) submitted to the Chief of Staff and was supported by the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC).

A statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin indicated is to ensure strict adherence of the Covid-19 protocols.

The statement added it was also to enable registered voters to exercise their franchise in safety and minimal inconvenience.

All political parties agreed to EC’s proposal

All the political parties have agreed to a proposal by the Electoral Commission’s (EC) to the Chief of Staff of Ghana to make Monday, December 7 a statutory holiday.

This was disclosed by the EC today, Wednesday, December 2.

The consensus according to the EC was agreed upon at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting held today.
The EC in a statement explained that its proposal sought to “give registered voters the opportunity to devote the day to exercise their civic right and responsibility to vote during the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.”

The election management body also revealed that “there was also a consensus by the political parties and the Commission that registered voters should be encouraged to cast their ballots early on election day.”

Present at the meeting were representatives of all the political parties, Civil Society Organisation’s (CSOs), and development partners.

All Political Parties have today, during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, agreed with the Commission’s proposal to the Chief of Staff of Ghana and the Ministry of the Interior to gazette Monday 7th December 2020 a Statutory Public Holiday.

The Commission’s proposal seeks to give Registered Voters the opportunity to devote the day to exercise their civic right and responsibility to vote during the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary Elections.

Present at the meeting were representatives of all the Political Parties, Civil Society Organisation’s (CSO’s), and Development Partners.

There was also a consensus by the Political Parties and the Commission that Registered Voters should be encouraged to cast their ballots early on election day. Registered Voters are expected to vote between 7:00 am and 5:00 pm on Monday, 7th December 2020.
