Maskless billboards of the President to be pulled down—Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

The Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has demanded mandatory pull down of billboards with maskless imaging of the president that are erected across the country to create awareness on the novel coronavirus.

According to him, such advertising boards were erected without the knowledge of his outfit and that of the president.

Addressing his grievances to the public yesterday on his page, Mr Nkrumah noted that such boards were not effectively communicating to the masses, since the President was not wearing face mask in the image.

Thus, he stated that his outfit has demanded city authorities to pull down those billboards.

“We have asked city authorities to pull this down,” Mr Nkrumah said.

He  however encouraged the well intentioned advertisers to engage with his outfit and the office of the president directly to avoid such future mishaps.

Mr Nkrumah admitted that those who flighted the boards were seeking the betterment of the country, and were helping the government to communicate the safety measures instituted by the Ministry of Health to the public.

He stated that the manner in which the advertisement was carried out was not appropriately done as they failed to engage the government on the imaging and messaging, thus called on them to seek the right sources for correct imaging to match the content of the advert.

“We appreciate all who seek to help government communicate at this time. But please do well to engage with the government on imaging and messaging. This billboard of the President without a mask is not from government,” Mr Nkrumah added.

He indicated that the last public appearance of the President, he wore his mask till his speech, therefore he would not warrant such image without mask.

The site observed that the billboards which were sprung up over the past week in Accra with the President’s image without a mask, were captioned: “Wear a mask wherever you go. It will help protect you from the virus.”

The imaging evoked lots of controversies among some Ghanaians with some critics questioning the visual communication of the advertisement, thus the clarification from the Minister.
