Sammy Gyamfi earns the name ‘insensitive dirty crazy politician’ over cartoon post that seeks to discredit EC’s xenophobic Voter’s register

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communication Director (NCD) of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been rebuked harshly for making fun of the memories of an American black man, George Floyd  who died painfully from the act of racism.

This was done in an attempt to discredit the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana over the current Voters Identification Card which his party was protesting against.

Mr Gyamfi who channelled his grievances about the action of the sitting government and the EC through a pictorial evidence of the situation between the ordinary Ghanaian and the EC at the wake of COVID-19 posted a cartoon of Madam Jean Mensa and President Akufo-Addo kneeling on a voter which suffocated the voter to scream “I cannot breath.”

In the demonstration, Madam Jean Mensa and the president could be seen in a police uniform the same way George Floyd, was pinned down to death by a white police man.

The act of Sammy Gyamfi infuriated  lots of his followers, thus condemned him for disrespecting the memories of the deceased.

They noted that the NDC party member was losing his sense of reasoning all in the name of politics and urged him to delete the cartoon from his handle.

Some said the hunger of power was making him to act below the belt, stressing that it was a rough time to be mocking an unarmed man whose death came as a shock to many blacks.

They called on him to join the call for justice for the soul of George Floyd rather than mocking his memories.

Esi E. Ansah said his action was “absolutely despicable! Using this tragedy to score dirty political points. Your lack of appreciation of the gravity of Floyd’s murder is unbelievably insensitive. Please find another meme and drop this irresponsible one. Ah..smh.”

Another follower, Mr Adjieteh stated that Mr Gyamfi was a crazy, dirty politician and could not believe he could go to such an extent to engage in politics.

However, Mr Gyamfi explained that he did not post the picture to make fun of the painful xenophobic murder of George Floyd or seek to exploit same for political capital in any way.

According to him, there was nothing wrong with sharing a cartoon which draws a parallel between the painful xenophobic murder of the American man and the evil attempt by the Ghana EC to disenfranchise millions of eligible voters through a xenophobic voter register.‬

On May 25, 2020 George Floyd, 46, died in Powderhorn, a neighbourhood south of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Mr Floyd was in handcuff and lying face down on a city street during his arrest for allegedly issuing a dud check of $20 at a deli.

Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer, pinned him down with his knee on the neck and kept his knee there for more than eight minutes till he died.

The President of the country, Nana Akufo-Addo expressed shock about the act and urged the Americans to fight for justice for the soul of the deceased.
