Support implementation of National Standards Assessment Test— IFEST

The Institute for Education Studies (IFEST) has called on the curriculum assessment agency in the country to support the implementation of a new educational flagship initiative dubbed: “National Standards Assessment Test (NSAT)”.

NSAT is an initiative that the Ministry of Education has proposed to introduce and implement this year to improve learning outcomes.

According to a statement issued in Accra on Monday and signed by the Acting Executive Director of IFEST, Peter Anti, the initiative should be spearheaded by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) in collaboration with the West African Examination Council (WAEC) to oversee future national examinations.

It said NSAT was commendable and lauded the sector ministry for proposing such initiative to give a facelift to the country’s education.

“We therefore propose that the agency in charge of curriculum and assessment is made to play a pivotal role in the implementation of the maiden NSAT,” the statement added.

IFEST believed that tracking students’ performance in addition to monitoring the fidelity of implementation of the standard-based curriculum was key to foster good teaching and learning.

It said the NSAT would help to identify students for remedial interventions and detect what the learning gaps were in order for it to be addressed.

“It will also provide information to aid resource allocation and the provision of targeted interventions; which schools and districts need specific intervention; and what the intended outcomes will be for such schools and districts as indicated in the National Pre-Tertiary Curriculum framework,” the statement noted.

To achieve objectives of the NSAT, IFEST called for adequate planning and broader consultations to be carried out in ensuring flawless implementation of the initiative.

“This proposition is in sync with the objective of the Ghana Accountability for Learning Outcomes Project (GALOP) which is to build the capacity of participating agencies,” the statement said  and urged the sector ministry to be guided by its commitment in implementing the project to its fullest.
