Directors’ and Actors’ Guild of Nigeria confirm the death of Ernest Asuzu

The Directors’ Guild of Nigeria (DGN) and the Actors’ Guild of Nigeria (AGN) have confirmed the death of Nollywood actor Ernest Asuzu, describing his death as sad.

The 37-year-old actor, according to report was slumped and rushed to a hospital in Lagos on Tuesday where he was confirmed dead.

Emeka Rollas, the President of AGN described the death of the actor as a sad one and expressed readiness of the guild to support the family of the actor.

“Yes, his death has been confirmed and it is a sad one. I just spoke with the family and I pray God to grant them the fortitude to bear the loss.

“We are also waiting for the family to let us know the burial plans so that the guild would know how to support in the preparations,” he said.

Mr Rollas noted that the actor who always played the role of a gun man was brave and great and said the industry would miss him.

“He is a great actor who would be missed by his fans and the industry at large,” he said.

Meanwhile, DGN President, Fred Amata who expressed shock about the sudden demise of Mr Asuzu indicated that information about the death got him dumbfounded, adding that his death was a big blow to the Nollywood industry.

“It is getting really trying, you know, to hear about it and get used to it. It is beginning to get to us the need to understand better what our purpose in life is.”

“We pray for the souls that have gone. Somehow, it is the assurance that our journey here is not wasted. For instance, I have been receiving calls as regards Ernest Asuzu’s death which means there are some things that he must have done right,” he stressed.

Mr Amata underscored the need for the industry to also celebrate the life and achievements of the hardworking late actor even though they were mourning him.

“As I said, we mourn the death but we must celebrate their life. We should sometimes overlook the pain of death when it comes and celebrate life because you must first be alive to die.”

“We give God the Glory. It is touching and painful, but we will continue to celebrate his life,” he said.

Begging for alms

Some social media users earlier claimed that Ernest Asuzu, before his death  allegedly was seen begging for money for his upkeep.

They said he was allegedly stricken by stroke and as such became poor to an extent of him begging for alms on streets and some enclosed public places.

“This guy Ernest Asuzu, Nollywood actor has been down with stroke. We just saw him begging at Just Right Super market Oke-Afa, Isolo, Lagos state. Nollywood is a disgrace. He needs help,” Bolingo2014 posted.

Career Journey

Ernest Asuzu began his acting career in the 90s and rose to prominence after he starred in the 1997 Nollywood classic, “Rituals.”

Apart from acting, he was also a musician with the name El Cream.

He is survived by his wife and two children.

He died at the age of 37, his wife, Mrs Jennifer Asuzu on Wednesday broke the news to the media.

She said the actor slumped on Tuesday evening and never woke up.

The actor, Mrs Asuzu explained nosedived in 2015 when he had a stroke and was bedridden for three years which affected his speech and acting career, thus was off the screen for many years.

In his last interview published in December 2020, Ernest Asuzu said his problem was spiritual.

He was also planning a return to Nollywood and music after an eight-year hiatus.

Fans of the Nigerian Veteran actor, Ernest Asuzu have taken to their social media page to mourn him and also share their condolences to the family he left behind.

Recall that months ago, the Asuzu became a trending topic on social media after a Nigerian man identified as Bolingo2014 on Instagram shared a video of himself and the actor.

Bolingo claimed that he saw the actor begging for money on the roadside at Oke-Afa in Isolo area of the state.

He alleged that the actor became this way after he suffered from a stroke.
