It cannot be right—Prez Akufo-Addo condemns systematic racism at the age of democracy

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed shock and distraught towards the killing of an unarmed black man, George Floyd, by a white police officer in the United States of America (USA).

According to him, the shameful act had brought back painful memories of how people of colour were treated some decades ago.

Sharing his condolence message to the family of the deceased yesterday on his Twitter handle, President Akufo-Addo bemoaned that it was disheartening to witness a death from the act of racism at an era of democracy and appealed to the good people of USA to condemn the evil practice.

“It cannot be right that, in the 21st century, the United States, this great bastion of democracy, continues to grapple with the problem of systemic racism,” he cried.

Nana Akufo-Addo said it was unfortunate for a humble young black soul to die out of the hand of a white man due to his colour.

He expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Floyd, stressing that justice would take it course.

President Akufo-Addo urged Americans to get inspired by the tragic death of George Floyd and protest against racism.

“We stand with our kith and kin in America in these difficult and trying times, and we hope that the unfortunate, tragic death of George Floyd will inspire a lasting change in how America confronts head on the problems of hate and racism,” he added.

The 46 year old black man lost his life on May 25, 2020 in Powderhorn, a neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota.

While Floyd was handcuffed and lying face down on a city street during an arrest, Derek Chauvin, a white Minneapolis police officer kept his knee on  Floyd’s neck for eight minutes and 46 seconds, leading to his sudden death.

According to the criminal complaint against Chauvin, two minutes and 53 seconds of that time occurred after George Floyd became unresponsive.
