Form two students of SHS and JHS to resume school tomorrow—GES announces

Form two students of Senior High School (SHS) and Junior High School (JHS) are returning to school tomorrow, Monday October 5 to continue their academic lessons.

This is announced in a statement issued in Accra and signed by the Head of public Relations Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Cassandra Twum Ampofo on Friday to remind parents, guardians  and students of SHS 2 and JHS 2 about the reopening of school as directed by the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The move, is to enable the students complete their second and third semesters respectively, which were interrupted by the closure of schools as a result of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak.

According to the GES, all the necessary measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of students while at school.

“All schools have been fumigated and disinfected. In addition Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) have been distributed to all schools,” the GES assured.

Management of GES further urged school authorities, staff and students to strictly adhere to the safety protocols that are instituted to contain the pandemic.

“Management urges parents/guardians and the general public to continue to support, cooperate with the educational authorities to ensure successful academic work in all the schools,” GES added.

Meanwhile, Government has postponed the 2019/2020 academic year of the country’s Elementary school including nursery, kindergarten, primary and Junior High School (JHS) 1 to next year, January 2021.

Senior High School (SHS) 1 will also resume in the same year as with the elementary.

This was announced by President Akufo-Addo during his 16th COVID-19 update to Ghanaians.

He said, per consultations with the Ghana Education Service (GES), the resumption of the next academic year in January 2021 will be made “with appropriate adjustments to the curriculum to ensure that nothing is lost from the previous year.”

“The Ghana Education Service, after further consultations, has decided to postpone the remainder of the academic year for all nursery, kindergarten, primary, JHS 1 and SHS 1 students,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.

Schools in the country were shut down in March 2020 after Ghana recorded its first two cases of Coronavirus infection.

Final year students were later allowed to return to schools to enable them to sit for their exit exams; the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for JHS students and the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for SHS students.

After five months of closure, however, many have called on the government to reopen the schools to make up for lost academic contact hours.

In addition, the President said “relevant dispositions will also be made so that the presence, at the same time, in the school of all streams of students, can occur in safety.”
