Ghana improves on its Corruption Perceptions Index 

Ghana is ranked 75 out of 180 countries in the 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) assessment report released by Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the local chapter of Transparency International (TI) in Accra yesterday.

The 2020 report saw the country scoring 43 points out of a possible 100, a two-point increase from 2019’s 41 points.

The new figures show, however, that the country has climbed up to the 75th position in the world ranking while maintaining its 10th spot in Africa.

Ghana’s score exceeds the sub-Saharan African (SSA) average score of 32 but is equal to the global average score of 43.

The report explained that “Ghana also performed better than 39 other SSA countries, including Benin, Lesotho, Burkina Faso, and Ethiopia.”

Meanwhile, “Seychelles is ranked highest with 66 points, followed by Botswana with 60, Cape Verde with 58, Rwanda with 54 and Mauritius 53 as the top five countries in SSA.”

The CPI for 2020 released worldwide scores and ranks of 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, having drawn upon 13 data sources, with it using a scale of zero (highly corrupt) to 100 (very clean) for the ranking.

The 2020 CPI ranks Denmark and New Zealand tops with 88 points each and Syria, Somalia and South Sudan at the bottom with 14, 12 and 12 points respectively.

The highest scoring region is Western Europe and the European Union with an average score of 66, while the lowest scoring region is sub-Saharan Africa with an average score of 32.
