Executive Director of the Organisation, Elijah Mensah, speaking with the media at the launch of the campaign in Ashaiman, a suburb of Accra, yesterday said a recent study conducted by his outfit into factors for indiscriminate waste disposal and environmental pollution was high apathy among the populace.

“We sampled views from several communities within the Greater Accra Region which revealed the lack of peoples’ commitment in keeping the environment tidy and safe for all,” he noted.

Citing Ashaiman as an example, Mr Mensah indicated that a major challenge in the community was waste disposal and its management as it was “commonplace to see people littering rampantly without considering the side effects to humanity, wildlife and the environment.”

“The community drainage systems are almost filled mostly with decomposable trash and recyclable plastic waste which paves the way for floods during the rainy season,” he said.

Starting off the campaign in the area, Mr Mensah said the NGO had recruited and built the capacity of about 30 community volunteers to undertake regular cleanup exercise in Tulaku, in Ashaiman.

“Volunteers were trained to also conduct an assessment to know the amount (weight) of litter collected, and the different kinds of constituents (recyclables) to make a case to waste management authorities to better explore ways to manage waste in the area,” he stated.

According to Mr Mensah, already the volunteers have supervised the collection of “seven tons of recyclable waste in the area which is savings to the Ghanaian economy and desilted many drains and gutters which were clogged.”

He appealed to Ghanaians to adopt positive lifestyles towards protecting the environment for posterity.
