Homosexuals need psychiatric care— Sam George
The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George says those who practice homosexuality need psychiatric attention.
According to him, a scientific research conducted in the United States of America in the 1970s established that homosexuality is a mental aberration and all those practicing the act needed urgent psychiatric intervention.
Speaking in a media interview after the passage of the bill, Sam George stated that the decision for the LGBTQ campaigners to take homosexuality out as a mental illness was not based on science but it was rather based on social campaign.
“Homosexuality is a mental condition. Homosexuality is a mental aberration. It’s an aberration of the mind. These are people who need mental or psychiatric care. And I am not saying this, because, until 1976 in the US homosexual was considered a mental illness in the genital and scientific manual of the US,” he said.
Sam George maintained that the International Court of Justice landmark ruling on gender stated categorically clear that there were only two genders; male and female and anything contrary to that was a mental disassociation of personality.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, popularly known as the Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, was passed by Parliament on May 29, 2026, after months of debate and public controversy.
The legislation seeks to prohibit activities related to LGBTQ+ advocacy, promotion and same-sex relationships, while imposing sanctions for violations.
Its passage has generated intense debate both locally and internationally, with supporters arguing that it protects Ghanaian cultural and family values, while critics contend that it could infringe on constitutional rights and freedoms.
The bill is currently awaiting transmission to President John Dramani Mahama.
