‘Mallari’ a horror movie wins big at 72nd FAMAS Awards
An epic horror movie, “Mallari” won the most awards with seven trophies, including Best Actor for Piolo Pascual, at the 72nd Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (Famas) awards which was held at the Manila Hotel, in the Philippines on Sunday.
“Mallari” is a 2023 Metro Manila Film Festival that talks about the horrific story of Fr. Severino Mallari, a 19th century priest and his descent into madness.
It recounts Mallari’s life where he reportedly murdered 57 people to aid his ailing mother.
Directed by Roderick Cabrido, the film led this year’s nominees with 14 out of 18 nominations.
It also won Gloria Diaz, Best Supporting Actress, Best Screenplay for Enrico Santos, Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.
In his acceptance speech, Piolo Pascual who won the best actor was grateful to the organisers of the awards and all those who played a part in his win.
“Thank you very much to FAMAS. I also thank the Lord God for this honor. Without the Lord God, I wouldn’t be here. Thank you also to Mentorque Productions and Bryan Diamante,” he said.
Highlighting on how he embraced the role in the said movie, Piolo said he asked significant questions to have a fair idea on what to do, which in turn his effort has earned him an award.
“The first thing I asked was, what is the production value of this film? He told me, we just want to make the best horror film of the year, and we won Best Picture. I also want to thank everyone who was part of this film,” he added.
Pascual tied the Best Actor award with Alfred Vargas of the drama film “Pieta.”
On his part, Alfred dedicated his award to his family.
“I am here because I am Filipino and I love the Philippines and I deeply love Filipino films. Until the last day of my life, my dream is to continue doing this because it is my first love. I dedicate this award to the Lord God, to my family, and to my wife Yasmine and our four children, especially our only boy, Cristiano.”
“I also thank Direk Adolf Alix for putting together this very humble film, and Gerry Gracio. Imagine, they brought together Nora Aunor, Gina Alajar, and Jaclyn Jose. I am grateful to the three of them because it was a dream come true to make a film with them. I also dedicate this to Ms. Jaclyn Jose; if I am correct, this is her last film. I learned so much from her,” he added.
