Convince others to register and partake in the 2020 elections—Prez to Ghanaians
The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians who have already registered for the voter Identification (ID) Card to convince others to also register.
According to him, that is the surest way to get everyone involved in the December polls.
In a post on his social media handle, President Akufo-Addo indicated that the ongoing registration exercise was very vital and needed inclusive efforts to make the exercise successful.
He underscored the need for everyone to be involved in the exercise in order to have a voice during the elections.
Aside them convincing others to partake in the exercise, he encouraged those with intact documents to guarantee for those who needed guarantors to register.
“If you have registered already there are two things you can do. Firstly, you can serve as a guarantor for up to 10 people who are eligible to register,” Nana Akufo-Addo said.
The voter registration exercise started last Tuesday and had seen over 3million people registered across the country.
Despite earlier calls by the opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) to cancel the exercise due to the outbreak of COVID-19, they have rescinded on their decision to partake in the exercise.
The NDC sued the Electoral Commission (EC) over its decision to compile a fresh voters’ register.
The NDC was seeking a “declaration that upon a true and proper interpretation of Article 45(a) of the 1992 Constitution, 2nd Defendant has the constitutional power to, and can, compile a register of voters only once, and thereafter revise it periodically, as may be determined by law.
Additionally, the NDC was demanding EC to rescind its decision to bar the use of old voter ID cards as registration proof in the compilation of the new register.
It said the action is baseless and in breach of the constitution, however, the supreme Court ruled against the NDC.
The registration exercise at its beginning was confronted with technical challenges and breech of COVID-19 protocols but EC Chairperson, Jean Mensa assured that they would beef up measures to ensure all the safety protocols are observed at the various centers.
