23rd VGMA: I didn’t apply for nomination, deal with organisers— Joe Mettle to critics

Sensational Gospel musician, Joe Mettle, has called on critics to be mindful when using the word “deserve” to disqualify his four nominations in the 23rd edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).

He was nominated for the artiste of the year, Best gospel artiste, Best gospel song and Album of the year category, but his nominations had seen mixed reaction from the public after organisers of the awards, Charter house unveiled the nominee lists on Saturday March 19.

According to him, many critics have been lashing out that he did not “deserve” the four nominations he gained in this year’s VGMA, which he said was fallacious.

Reacting to a question during a media interview in Accra yesterday on how he felt about some music enthusiasts strongly believed he did not “deserve” his nominations, Joe Mettle explained that the word “deserve” used by many to attack him should be scrutinised carefully as he believed it was a “big” word.

“I’m not the one that makes the selection. I don’t know why the people come after me… You see this word deserve is a very big one,” he said.

Joe Mettle disclosed that even though he didn’t send any application to be nominated for this year’s VGMA, he found out later that his manager sent entries on his behalf.

“I didn’t know that my name had been filed for nomination. My manager filed at my back. That made me surprised. My first reaction was like, oh okay,” he said.

The 2017 VGMA Artiste of the Year winner, expressed dismay on how he was being attacked by critics since it was the organisers of the awards scheme who determine the criteria for artistes to be selected, and as such there was nothing he could do if they considered his works “fit” for the category.

“The VGMA administrators set the criteria for artists to be chosen, so there is nothing I can do if they think my work is suitable and fit for the category,” he added.

Just as many believed that Joe Mettle’s works over the last year were unpopular, hence did not merit any nomination, Reggae artiste, Ras Kuuku has been one of the main critics of the VGMA’s inclusion of Joe Mettle in multiple categories.
