African leaders join Ghanaians to mourn JJ Rawlings

Some African Presidents and other prominent figures have paid tribute to Ghana’s former president who passed on Thursday at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).

The  first  was Liberian  President  George  Weah   who  in a  tweet  said  Africa has lost a great leader.

He, on behalf of the government and people of the Republic of Liberia conveyed their deepest and profound sympathy to the government and people of Ghana, the Rawlings family, and the entire Africa for the death of a great statesman.

President of Burkina Faso, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré said Ghana has lost a patriot who put the country back on the path of growth.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said “the entire African continent will sorely miss the sterling qualities of the great leader.”

He said “the passion, discipline and moral strength that the former Ghanaian leader employed to reposition his country over many years continue to reverberate across the continent and beyond.”

He assured that the ideas that Rawlings postulated, particularly for development in Africa, and his sacrifices in working in various countries as an envoy for peace and democracy will always be remembered.

He prayed that the almighty God will grant the Ghanaian leader eternal rest, and comfort all his loved ones.

A former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar said Rawlings still stood for African unity and renaissance even after he left office in 2001.

According Mr Abubakar, the late Jerry John Rawlings was an African giant. His tenure as leader of Ghana remained emblematic with the restoration of that country. Even after office, he stood tall for African unity and renaissance.

A former Director of Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba, called on others to honour Rawlings by emulating his courage and candour.

He said he was sad to learn of the demise of President Jerry Rawlings, describing him as a good friend and great man.

The Former President, Flt Lt Jerry John Rawlings died yesterday at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

He was survived by his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings and four children. They are Dr Zanetor, Yaa Asantewaa, Amina and Kimathi Rawlings.
