The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the affluent in the society to donate to a newly created fund, dubbed “COVID-19 Fund” in catering for the welfare of the needy.
The fund was established recently to help cater for the less privileged in sustaining their livelihoods amidst the Coronavirus outbreak in the country.
Addressing the nation for the fourth time on measures instituted to mitigate the spread of the virus in Accra yesterday, the president announced that the COVID-19 Fund would be managed by an independent board of trustees, thus would be chaired by the Former Chief of staff, Ms Sophia Akuffo.
He noted that the welfare of the needy was paramount in ‘hard times like this’ and urged individuals, corporate entities and other stakeholders to exhibit love by donating into the fund.
Nana Akufo-Addo mentioned that the moment has come for the vulnerable to be protected, stressing the need for each person to ensure the needy get the needed support to make them equally fit into the society.
In enhancing the lives of the vulnerable, he has directed the Controller and Accountant General to pay his next three months’ salary, including April, May and June salary into the Fund.
The President also lauded churches, financial institutions and individuals who already made donations to help in the fight and requested for God’s blessing upon their lives.
“We can defeat this virus if we all commit ourselves to respecting all the measures that have been outlined,” he added.
