Kweku Baako wins defamation case against Kennedy Agyapong

The Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr has won a defamatory suit against the Member of Parliament (MP) of Assin Central Constituency, Kennedy Agyapong.

Mr Kwaku Baako who was aggrieved by some comments of the MP seek justice in court after Mr Agyapong dared him to send the issue to court, if he was unhappy about the defamatory statements.

The veteran journalist sought justice from the High Court which ruled in his favour on Friday.

Mr Agyapong is to pay the damage of Gh¢100,000 with the cost of Gh¢30,000.

The court also gave the MP a month to retract his comments and apologise on the media platforms which he used to defame the editor.

Mr. Baako in October 2018, filed a GH¢25 million defamation suit against the outspoken legislator for some alleged defamatory comments against him on various radio stations in the month of July.

According to him, the MP had used several demeaning words to describe him, including ‘corrupt’, ‘hypocrite’ and ‘dishonest.’

Apart from the damages, Mr.Baako had appealed to the high court to compel the MP to apologise and retract his defamatory comments as well as perpetually restrain “Mr Agyapong, his agents, assigns and servants from further publishing any defamatory words against him.”

There had been earlier reports that the MP and business mogul was seeking an out of court settlement on the matter.

Confirming this, Mr Baaku had said he found some elements in Mr Agyapong’s counter settlement completely unacceptable hence the decision to keep the matter in court.

In its subsequent ruling on Friday, June 26, the High Court gave Mr Agyapong 30 days to retract and apologise three times on the platforms he used to defame Kweku Baako.

The platforms include his own media stations Net2 TV and Oman FM, and Multimedia stations, Adom FM and Asempa FM.
