New COVID-19 variant in Ghana: GMA confirms very contagious Delta Variant in country
The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has admonished the public to continue observing the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) safety protocols following the detection of the Delta Variant of the SARSCoV2 virus in the country.
The new variant of the COVID-19 has been described as very contagious, and originated from India, and has been recorded in Ghana.

Also called the Indian strain, it has caused huge spikes in India, and a serious increase in cases in the United Kingdom despite the fact that large sections of the population in those countries have been vaccinated.
Speaking on a local radio station here, Vice President of the GMA, Dr Frank Serebour, stressed the need for strict observance of the safety protocols in view of the fact that the variant is very ravaging.
Meanwhile, Deputy Director in Charge of Public Health, Ashanti Regional Health Services, Dr Rockson Michael Adjei, has noted the blatant disregard for the protocols was accounting for the rise in new cases and cautioned the public to avoid practices that could trigger the spread of the deadly disease.

He told the media that the region had been recording an average of 20 new cases in the last two months but the last two weeks had almost doubled.
“We recorded 39 cases two weeks ago and 37 cases just last week which is worrying considering that our weekly cases in the last two months have been 20 cases averagely,” Dr Adjei lamented.
He said the fight against the pandemic was a collective responsibility of every citizen, adding that no effort of health authorities could stop the spread of the disease if people continue to disregard the safety protocols.

“Preventing the disease from spreading is the way to go and the best means to achieve that is the strict observation of the protocols,” he said.
“Let us observe the protocols with all the seriousness just like how we did when the pandemic broke so that we can collectively halt the spread of the disease,” he added.
