Kofi Koranteng, Mauvrich Kofi Gane and three others to be prosecuted over forgery Presidential documents—EC

Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, (EC) Jean Mensa has revealed the intention of the elections management body to file official complaint against the disqualified presidential aspirants for allegedly forging documents to their nominations forms.

According to her, the complaint will be made at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service for the  candidates to explain why they forged the documents, leading to their disqualification.

The EC yesterday disqualified five of the 17 aspirants who were hoping to contest for the December 7 polls, citing breaches on their forms.

In all, 12 aspirants were cleared to contest for the elections this year.

The flagbearer of the All People’s Congress (APC) and the National Democratic Party (NDP), Hassan Ayariga and Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings respectively, were those cleared by the EC.

John Dramani Mahama of the NDC and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the NPP were also cleared by the EC to contest.

Ivor Kobina Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Brigitte Dzogbenuku of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) were also cleared by the EC.

But Kofi Koranteng, Mauvrich Kofi Gane, Akwasi Addae Odike, Kwasi Busumbru and Nana Agyenim Boateng were those disqualified.

They will face investigations by the CID as stated by the EC.

Ms Mensa taking the press through the set up and Conduct of the Nomination Filing Process said the Commission developed innovative strategies to enhance and ensure a transparent, credible, fair, peaceful and yet accountable electoral process.

“This year, the Commission made the Nomination Forms to Aspiring Presidential and Parliamentary Candidates available online.

The Commission also developed a detailed Checklist that embodied the criteria to be satisfied by Presidential Candidates as prescribed by law. This template guided the scoring and awarding of marks by Teams established by the Commission to review the Nomination Forms submitted,” she stated.

In all these innovations, Ms Mensa observed helped eliminate the confusion and tension that characterised previous nomination processes.

She announced that for the first time in the country’s history, three women put themselves up for nomination for the position of Presidential Candidate, adding that “this is a testament to the growth of our democratic space.”

The Chairperson congratulated all the nominees who made it to compete in the December 7 polls, while she stressed the need  for them to conduct peaceful campaign and comply with her outfit to ensure free and fair elections.
