Akua Donkor is to pay GH¢1,000,000 in court for exposing Mahama as ‘Papa no’

A total of GH¢1,000,000 is expected to be paid by the Founder of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor and Wontumi Communications Limited (WCL) for defaming ex-president, John Dramani Mahama.

Madam Donkor, a host on Wontumi FM Oheneba Nana Asiedu and the entire WCL have been dragged to court for alleging that former President Mahama was the face behind the controversial phrase ‘Papa No.’

According to a statement of claim sighted by Spot On News, a plaintiff who was the 2016 parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for Asante Akim North, Mary Awusi explained that Madam Donkor on the show also alleged that John Mahama was responsible for her two children.

The comment she observed was libelous and should be dealt with by the law for her to retract and apologise for defaming her character.

Ms Awusi bemoaned that the utterances of  Madam Donkor suggested “she is an unfaithful spouse, an unchaste person, a pervert, a person of low moral character, a person of no integrity and that the second child of her marriage is not the child of her husband but that the child is the child of a man she is not married to”.

“The plaintiff who was the Parliamentary Candidate for the NDC in the 2016 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, says Madam Donkor had earlier made a libelous statement without any justification against her person in an interview which was also uploaded to YouTube,” it said.

The statement noted that Akua Donkor is expected to pay general damages of Gh¢300,000 with Oheneba Nana Asiedu paying Gh¢100,000 for general damages  as well as Gh¢600,000 as punitive damages against the defendants which also include Wontumi Communications Limited.

Before dragging the issue to court, the plaintiff stated that she called Madam Donkor to question her on the “malicious and reckless claims” she made on WCL for her to apologise which she became indifferent with it.

She also expressed concern about how WCL gave their platform to Madam Donkor to repeat and utter the defamatory statements against her without any justification.

The plaintiff avers that the host of the radio programme failed to dissociate himself from the defamatory statement made by Madam Donkor and also failed  to get her to retract the defamatory statement.

“As a result, she wants the court to order an apology on the platforms operated by Wontumi Communications Limited “with the same prominence the defamatory words received within 14 days after the judgment.

Madam Awusi also wants an interlocutory and perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, their agents, assigns and servants from further publishing any defamatory words against her,” the statement added.

‘Papa No’ became popular on social media after actress Tracey Boakye used it repeatedly to describe a married man she claims she and musician Mzbel were in the same relationship with.

After her comments, there have been speculations about who ‘Papa No’ is with many especially on the side of the ruling party, New Patriotic Party (NPP) alleging that former President Mahama is “Papa No.”
