The will of Assin North people will not be subverted— James Quayson fights court over disqualification

The ousted Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, James Gyakyi Quayson, has said his victory at the December 2020 polls was legitimate and could not be stolen.

According to him, the vote of Assin North people will not be subverted by the court order for a by-election.

A Cape Coast High Court presided over by Justice Kwasi Boakye on Wednesday held that Mr Quayson violated Ghana’s constitution and other statutory provisions that guided the country’s elections in relation to his Canadian citizenship.

But breaking his silence since the court’s ruling in a statement issued in Accra yesterday, Mr Quayson said the victory – the will of the Assin North people – would not be subverted.

“As the unimpeachable facts show, I have always been a sincere, loyal, law abiding and patriotic citizen who only set out in good conscience to come serve the great people of Assin North with all my heart and with all my capacity.

“Our massive victory in Assin North on December 7, 2020 was a pure and legitimate one handed over to us by the discerning people of Assin North and we shall resist every attempt to subvert the true will of the people.

“Victory from the masses is far superior to the dark machinations of an elite few,” he wrote.

Mr Quayson expressed his appreciation for what he said was the outpouring of support and solidarity following the nullification of his election.

Mr Quayson said the solidarity from the chiefs and people of Assin North, the rank and file of the NDC and the general public in his time of adversity has “renewed my confidence in a brighter future for this country regardless of the treacherous momentary setbacks”.

He assured his “beloved” constituents that “I am in high spirit and confident that this momentary travesty shall rather make us emerge stronger”.

The now former MP urged his supporters not to be worried, neither should they be discouraged because the confirmation of “our” historic victory beckons.

“Take heart and be of good cheer; the victory of the NDC and all true democrats shall not be stolen!

“The Almighty Lord is on our side – we fear no foe,” he stated.
